Interactive math games for first graders allow young students to play their way to a deeper understanding of numerical concepts. Addressing addition, subtraction and other first grade math skills through games helps make learning fun and expands a child has academic experience beyond the traditional classroom setting. By merging print materials with technology, both teachers and parents can aid children in becoming more proficient with the concepts they will need to be successful in school and in daily life.

Just because your child will be playing fun online games does not mean the same value will not be there. Create a comfortable study zone. Turn off outside distractions such as cell phones, radios or TVs. Make sure your child is not tired or hungry so that he or she can focus all attention on learning. Also try to keep the lessons consistent with what is being learned in school. A quick chat with the teacher or signing up for an online newsletter from the classroom are ways to keep tabs on the lesson plans. Since 3rd grade math relies on the concepts that were learned during kindergarten, first and second grades, do not be afraid to start your child at a lower level. With adaptive learning, the programs will not move on to the next level until your child has a firm grasp on the current material. The online games will be a wonderful way for your child to catch up on basic arithmetic concepts and be comfortable using them across applications.

Mathematics, or more colloquially, "math", is one of the most important subjects that students learn in school. Not only do good mathematical skills form a necessary for understanding of other subjects, especially the sciences, but also, math is an important life skill. Learning math usually of course begins at young age, sometimes even at home, with learning numbers and counting. At kindergarten and then school, students then progress through arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), and eventually to more advanced topics such as algebra, geometry, graphs and charts, and statistics. The idea that an understanding of math and language fundamentals helps children do better in schools is not surprising. However, the degree to which early math skills play a role is. "The paramount importance of early math skills - of beginning school with a knowledge of numbers, number order and other rudimentary math concepts -- is one of the puzzles coming out of the study," said Duncan.

These children often rebel against a system that has failed to accommodate their needs and a small but significant minority can exert a disproportionately disruptive influence within schools before eventually disengaging with the formal learning process altogether. This, asserts Professor Barbara, has serious implications for us all. Craig Rama of the University of Alabama appears to provide compelling evidence in support of this theory. "Seventy-five percent of all imprisoned males in America have poor school records and low IQs," Rama pointed out. "Tracing their backgrounds turns up a familiar pattern: They begin as children from disadvantaged families starting school academically behind. They do not know how to read or do basic math because they are in poor systems they get little help. Growing frustration often turns into truancy, school failure, aggression and violence."

There are basic skills every kindergarten needs to know before starting the school year. While the first portion of many school years is used to review basic concepts, teachers quickly move on to new subjects, assuming most children have had plenty of exposure to the basic concepts, including letter and number recognition. The ultimate goal in kindergarten is to get children ready to read, which takes a great deal of time. Teachers typically move on when a majority of the class is ready to learn the basics of reading. If your child is left behind, it could leave him behind for the rest of his school career.
