The same children can play the games but in different ways, since the programs are tailored toward the learning styles of each child. This is what makes adaptive learning an essential tool in classrooms as well. If education is your goal, you may want a set of worksheets designed to teach your child all of the basic skills they will need for school. There are hundreds if not thousands of free printable worksheets available online. These are ideal for filling time or keeping the kids busy on a rainy day, but few of them offer a systematic set of worksheets with activities designed to teach your children a specific set of skills. If education is your aim, you may have to spend a little to get useful, comprehensive worksheets that actually help your child to learn. Some free worksheets are not good quality - the pictures are fuzzy, backgrounds print gray or speckled - and children tend to notice these things. If you are using the worksheets to educate your child, you may want to choose good quality worksheets that encourage your child to produce good quality work. The answer for the above question is hidden in a simple example. I always give the example of stairs to my students, and giving the same example in this article. I compare the steps of a staircase to the concepts in mathematics. As this is very hard to reach higher floors of a building without stairs (or elevators these days), same way learn higher concepts in mathematics without learning basic concepts is very hard. People have to start from the ground, then first step, second, third and so on to reach their destination floor. Exactly the same way students have to start from Kindergarten, then grade one, grade two and three and so on to reach their math destination. Also, if some of the steps are broken in the staircase, it is still hard to reach the desired floor using those steps. Same way, if you are missing some of the basic concepts from elementary grades, math for you is still hard.
Teaching equations to kindergarten children needs to be a hands on activity using tangible resources where children can explore, experiment and self correct. At this age, printed workbooks and worksheets should be avoided and manipulative materials used instead. So bring out all the counters, figurines, shapes and blocks you can find because this is the way in which this age group of children learn best. A simple game with a dice and counters can teach equations. Throw the dice and put out the required number of counters. Throw again and do the same. Then physically put all of the counters together to show one group and count them again (addition).
The game is then played exactly like a normal game of bingo, with the teacher playing the part of the bingo caller, but instead of the teacher calling out the numbers printed on the cards, the teacher instead calls out math problems (the teacher may also write the problem on the blackboard). The student bas task is to solve each problem, and then look for the number on their bingo card. As you can imagine, this can be a lot of fun, and before you know it students can forget they are learning math! What is more, teachers can also easily vary the game play, for example, by using different types of math problems, or perhaps even by asking members of the class to solve each problem before moving on to the next bingo call.
There are basic skills every kindergarten needs to know before starting the school year. While the first portion of many school years is used to review basic concepts, teachers quickly move on to new subjects, assuming most children have had plenty of exposure to the basic concepts, including letter and number recognition. The ultimate goal in kindergarten is to get children ready to read, which takes a great deal of time. Teachers typically move on when a majority of the class is ready to learn the basics of reading. If your child is left behind, it could leave him behind for the rest of his school career.
Play is how children utilize this particular learning style. Play is one of the most powerful vehicles for facilitating learning. When you play with your child you are demonstrating how much you value them and enjoy their company. This helps build self-esteem and many studies now reveal that children with high emotional intelligence will outperform children with higher IQ but lower self esteem. In the UK questions are being asked regarding whether children are given enough time to simply play. The pattern seems to be that children are given more time to play during their early years in school but towards the middle years a more formal approach dominates their school day. Emeritus Professor Barbara argues that the tendency for state education to focus on a more formal, left-brain orientated approach to learning can have disastrous implications for a significant percentage of children, particularly boys, who tend to be predominantly tactile learners.
