The answer for the above question is hidden in a simple example. I always give the example of stairs to my students, and giving the same example in this article. I compare the steps of a staircase to the concepts in mathematics. As this is very hard to reach higher floors of a building without stairs (or elevators these days), same way learn higher concepts in mathematics without learning basic concepts is very hard. People have to start from the ground, then first step, second, third and so on to reach their destination floor. Exactly the same way students have to start from Kindergarten, then grade one, grade two and three and so on to reach their math destination. Also, if some of the steps are broken in the staircase, it is still hard to reach the desired floor using those steps. Same way, if you are missing some of the basic concepts from elementary grades, math for you is still hard.
Most volumes begin with an explanation of basic arithmetic operations namely: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Reference tables are supplied to provide clues for quick mental arithmetic and mastery of math facts. When ready to be tested, the student can select a drill, which has 10 questions and are selected from a database of number pairs for calculation. The Basic Level volumes use simple single digit numbers and the interactive math software at the Advanced Level uses mostly double digit numbers for math practice problems. Each drill is then scored and timed with the results saved. With the test records, students can follow their own progress and adults who may be supervising can monitor progress and assess if there are any learning issues that require intervention.
Math is a basic subject and hence, it is included in the curriculum from the kindergarten level. However, doing math is not at all a good experience for all students. The subject needs more concentration and step-by-step understanding. Students cannot follow the same methodology for math preparation as they generally do for other subjects including geography, chemistry, physics and others. Math needs more practice and this is one of the subjects in which students can score well and improve their overall grades in exams. This subject has broad real life applications from purchasing groceries to maintaining bank transactions. We use math everywhere. We start learning math from our childhood days, for example counting flowers and birds with our parents. Moreover, some students face difficulties while solving math and to overcome these learning problems, some steps are discussed below.
Quality may be a little more expensive, but good worksheets will motivate your child to produce neat work that they can be proud of. If you want to start preparing your child for preschool, kindergarten or even junior school, you need to find preschool worksheets that provide a variety of activities. Literacy, numeracy, reading, writing, drawing, social and natural sciences are some of the areas that children between the ages of 3 and 7 can and should start learning about. Look for variety in the worksheets, as repeating the same exercise over and over will bore your child. Lots of pictures, fun activities and clearly laid out worksheets are what you are looking for. If you are just looking for a few fun pages to keep the kids busy while you cook dinner, then many of the free printable worksheets available will be suitable.
The math software is undeniably a valuable tool for discovering a students weaknesses or accomplishments. This bundle is appropriate for elementary math students as well as middle school math students, high school math students, who need to learn or re-learn the basics of arithmetic. Many students slip through their early elementary math years with holes in their elementary math education. Older learners will feel the pride of accomplishing math skills they thought they would never learn. However, this software is not only feasible for young learners but for adults as well, who needs to polish and review again their mathematical skills. Teachers on their part find the program valuable as the math tests are scored and stored by the computer for evaluation of progress. The process is also simple because after taking the test, a personalized score sheet is printed along with an evaluation of topics requiring further study. The student can then return to the body of the program and practice those sections which were identified as weak areas. The use of the tests is flexible as the student may take Test A as a pre test and Test B as a post test or Test A may be used for one student and Test B for another. As a whole, a math software is a modern blessing for both learners and teachers who would enjoy studying the numbers instead of dreading them.
Two of the best options are Omega Math and ALEKS Math. Both of these programs are well-developed online math programs. Omega Math covers Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, as well as Geometry, and ALEKS is a full program for grades Kindergarten through High School, including Trigonometry, Statistics, and Accounting. There are some differences in presentation style, but both programs cover the material thoroughly, and all that a student needs to do is log in, have their pencil and paper nearby, and begin their study. Omega Math tends to be better equipped for students who catch on to math skills fairly easily and are motivated to streamline their work. Students log in to their course, view a PowerPoint lesson, and work through homework problems on their own. Feedback is given and students can also complete worksheets for extra practice. Chapter tests are provided, scored immediately, and parents can track the progress throughout the course by viewing simple charts and grade books making it very parent-friendly.
Many teachers do not appear to know how to harness the power of play to effectively lead children to an understanding of math concepts. This is hardly surprising as teachers strive to meet externally imposed targets with little emphasis or guidance given on how to implement play based learning in the math class. The text book and worksheet rule the day. Until schools are allowed more freedom to adopt a more child-centered approach children will continue to struggle in math and many will ultimately disengage from learning altogether.
